Most of us lead very busy lives. Despite Hawaii’s low voter turnout, many of us also believe in voting. So I didn’t know whether to rejoice or cry when I came across Colin Moore’s commentary (“Hawaii needs official voters’ guide,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, Oct. 31).
Thank you, Mr. Moore, for reading my mind the day after I helped my 97-year-old mother to vote. I had previously skimmed my own absentee ballot but what a shocker to see, on the back, questions that I knew nothing about, including a constitutional convention matter.
I knew the Hawaii Supreme Court invalidated the question on funding public education for keiki because of poor wording, but there was no warning about which part of the ballot should be ignored.
I was going to use the Star-Advertiser’s recommendations on Office of Hawaiian Affairs candidates but it wasn’t available when my mom and I got together so I could read her the choices.
Since Moore’s article explains well what other states have done, how about an official voters’ guide for Hawaii as well?
