City officials responded to a sewage spill Tuesday night at 1418 St. Louis Heights Drive due to a blockage caused by asphalt and rocks that resulted in more than 12,000 gallons of raw sewage flowing into Manoa Stream.

A crew from the city Department of Environmental Services responded to a 6 p.m. call Tuesday and released the blockage at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Workers had to dig out and expose a paved-over manhole in order to release the blockage.

Road paving material had clogged the pipe, pushing an estimated 30,030 gallons of raw wastewater out the covered manhole and down the roadway. Approximately 12,530 gallons entered storm drains fronting 1406 and 1412 St. Louis Heights Drive, which empties into Manoa Stream. The crew was able to recover an estimated 17,500 gallons.

Warning signs will be posted at the site, and water samples will be taken. The city has also notified the state Health Department and has cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the affected area. The state Health Department warns the public to stay out of Manoa Stream near Kanewai Community Park until the warning signs are removed.
