If the state and public school teachers really want to get more funding for schools, get a Lotto or enter the Mega Millions or Powerball lotteries, with any state profits going solely to education.
Other states have lotteries and use their portion of lotto monies to support education. Taxing citizens more in any fashion is not the way to get money for education and will only irritate an already dissatisfied public.
Lawmakers afraid that this would lead to other forms of gambling need to wake up — they can control it if they do it right, unlike their writing of the constitutional amendment on imposing a surcharge on investment properties for education.
Lotteries also give our citizens the chance, however far-fetched, to perhaps strike it rich like that very, very fortunate person in South Carolina.
