The lines on the crosswalks have been painted going in the wrong direction. They are not a visual deterrent to oncoming traffic.
In everyday life, we encounter “do-not-cross-the-line” deterrents — ropes, fences, gates, chains, cables, taped-off police investigation scenes and construction sites.
In our existing crosswalk design, it tells the driver to keep going and the pedestrian to stop. This is backwards.
The inexpensive and effective solution would be to change the direction of the lines and use the type of paint that glows at night, a Flectrolite paint that is commonly used in fishing lures, and refracts the light back from approaching headlights, alerting the driver.
