It is disheartening that the Hawaii Supreme Court threw out the proposed constitutional amendment to use the property tax to fund public education (“Question invalidated,” Star-Advertiser, Oct. 20). The objection that the language was vague is unconvincing.

There clearly was major opposition to the proposal from business interests — who got support from four former governors. But everybody knew what the issue was, and the voters should have been allowed to decide.

The Hawaii public schools have been underfunded for generations. The results have been inferior performance. Are we really ready to accept that?
