It’s a sad state of affairs when a new ranking lists Hawaii as the nation’s second-least politically engaged state — and that elicits no surprise, other than the reaction: Which state is worst?
That would be New Mexico, according to personal-finance website WalletHub, which scored the 50 states and D.C. across 10 key indicators, such as “percentage of registered voters in the 2016 presidential election” (Hawaii was dead last), to “total political contributions per adult population” (42nd). Come on, people. Voting, at the very least, should be on every eligible citizen’s must-do list. Walk-in voting here begins Tuesday — and this year, registering to vote can be done up to, and on, the Nov. 6 general election (see elections.hawaii.gov). No excuses.
