Grease and some pipe repair material clogged a sewer pipe this morning, sending more than 1,000 gallons of sewage out of a manhole and into Kalihi Stream, the Department of Environmental Services said.

The department received a call at about 9:30 a.m. about a manhole overflowing near 1260 Richard Lane and found grease and vinyl tape — material from a formerly-used cured-in-place pipe rehabilitation technology — blocking a 10-inch pipe.

The clog sent 1,125 gallons of raw wastewater into the stream.

A crew unclogged the pipe by 10:15 a.m. and notified the Department of Health about the pollution. Crews posted warning signs and took water samples today.

An Environmental Services crew cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized the area. Environmental Services warned the public to stay out of the area until warning signs have been removed.
