My daughter has severe disabilities, and as is the case of people who are somehow perceived to be “different,” she is mostly shunned by an uncomfortable general public.
I only know Judge Keith Hiraoka distantly, yet if we bump into him around town, he always makes a point to greet my handicapped daughter, and not with a feigned sense of obligation or sympathy.
Rather, he addresses her directly, with the dignity and respect that all people deserve. Except for those hailing from the disabled community, it is highly unusual for someone to seek genuine engagement with her.
A person reveals their heart in the presence of a disabled child. There are many well-qualified attorneys who could serve on the appellate court, but our community is diverse, and we deserve a justice who will accept each and every one of us, as flawed or “different” as we may be, with honor and compassion. Mr. Hiraoka is extraordinary in this respect, and that is but one reason among many why his appointment to the Intermediate Court of Appeals should be confirmed.
