Bail was revoked Friday for a man charged with a fatal shooting in Haleiwa last month.

Circuit Judge Todd Eddins granted a request by city prosecutors to revoke $1 million bail for Kaden Kanae, who is charged in the shooting death of Thomas McCandless Jr. in Haleiwa Beach Park after midnight Sept. 29.

Kanae, 22, has been held at Oahu Community Correctional Center since Oct. 1 unable to post bail, but Deputy Prosecutor Duane Kokesch argued that bail should be revoked because Kanae is both a flight risk and a danger to the community.

He is charged with second-­degree murder and several firearms charges in connection with the McCandless case.

At the time of the shooting, Kanae was out on bail in connection with a robbery in Waikiki Aug. 11 that also involved a semiautomatic firearm, according to court records.

Attorney Randall Hiranaka argued that it was McCandless who initiated the confrontation on the morning of the shooting.

Eddins agreed with the prosecution’s argument. “I cannot fathom any conditions, or combination of conditions, that will ensure the safety of the public from further criminality by Mr. Kanae,” he said.

Police said McCandless, 40, drove past a group of men at the Monuments area of Haleiwa Beach Park while with his two juvenile sons about 12:45 a.m. Sept. 29 when he recognized one of the men, later identified as Kanae, as the same person who shot him during an altercation May 15.

McCandless turned his vehicle around and parked at Monuments, police said.

While his sons stayed in the vehicle, McCandless approached Kanae and shoved him, triggering a fight during which Kanae allegedly punched McCandless. Two other males also jumped in and attacked McCandless, police said.

Kanae and the others allegedly continued to assault McCandless after he fell to the ground.

One of the victim’s sons stepped out of the vehicle and allegedly saw Kanae pull a gun from his waistband, stand over McCandless and aim at his father’s chest.

The son shut his eyes and heard “a loud noise,” police said.

Kanae and his companions allegedly fled in a gray Acura. Kanae was arrested in Wahiawa several hours later.

Court documents said McCandless’ son recognized Kanae from a photo on social media showed to him months ago by his father, who “explained to him that Kanae was the person that had shot him earlier this year.”

The son called 911 and attempted to administer first aid to his father. McCandless was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he later died.
