Your article about Keith Hiraoka’s nomination to the state Intermediate Court of Appeals was most distressing (“Former Ige campaign manager gets plum posting,” Star-Advertiser, Oct. 9).
While friendship with the governor is never a good reason for such an appointment, neither should such friendship be disqualifying. I’ve known Keith professionally for 30 years, usually on the opposite side of a case. He is one of the finest lawyers in Honolulu.
His integrity is unmatched and his ability to deal with complex issues dispassionately and respectfully is excellent. Under any administration, Keith is a fine choice, especially for our appellate courts.
Had your reporter reached out to members of the Hawaii State Bar Association, I’m certain what I say here would have been echoed by those who know Keith best. I hope he is confirmed. He will serve all of us well.
