East-facing shores of Big Island under high surf advisory
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for east-facing shores of Hawaii island, in effect through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Surf is expected to rise to five to eight feet today and six to nine feet late Tuesday along east-facing shores on the Big Island as an easterly swell from Hurricane Sergio in the eastern Pacific fills in. The surf will likely hold through Wednesday, then gradually lower through the second half of the week.
The public should expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous, weather officials said. Localized wave run-up may cause beach erosion during high tide.
Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should exercise caution and heed all advice given by lifeguards officials.
The state forecast, meanwhile, calls for trades to gradually build through Tuesday night, then ease off in the second half of the week as high pressure to the northeast weakens.
