Editorial: Keeping up the Koko Crater stairs

The Kokonut Koalition has launched a GoFundMe campaign to stabilize the Koko Crater trail in partnership wiht the City and County of Honolulu, which would include the installation of safety enhancements at the trestle, pictured here.

Kudos to the Kokonut Koalition, the grassroots advocates making the financial trek on behalf of the aging Koko Crater stairs, the popular hiking attraction that has fallen into disrepair.

The community group has launched a GoFundMe campaign (www.gofundme.com/get-the-stairs-fixed) with a goal of raising $10,000. The fundraiser page is displaying a notice that “This campaign is trending,” or at least it was on Tuesday. That’s one hopeful sign for success. The other part, of course, is to partner with the city Department of Parks and Recreation to get the repairs done.

Major-league athletes coming to town

While Hawaii has never been home to a major league sports team — and the Pro Bowl is no longer a yearly event on Oahu — big-leaguers still touch down now and then for training sessions and an occasional competition. Basketball and baseball fans will soon have opportunity to see some pros on the field and court.

This weekend, the Los Angeles Clippers — in town for their second preseason camp here — will start a five-game preseason matchup with Sydney, Australia’s Kings team at the Stan Sheriff Center.

And in early November, this year’s now-forming Major League Baseball All-Star Team is slated to take part in open workouts and a clinic at Les Murakami Stadium.
