David Shapiro is on the right track (“Politics of shutting up must also involve listening,” Star-Advertiser, Volcanic Ash, Sept. 23).
Critical listening that sets aside preconceptions is certainly needed on all sides. U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono’s recommendation to men to “shut up and step up” was probably based on the refusal of Republicans to do precisely that in rushing the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation. Their actions are inappropriate.
The only way America can continue achieving great things is if everyone finds ways to set aside preconceptions for a moment and consider something different. America is a good nation that has offered hope and opportunity to those around the world. We are not perfect, but our messy democracy offers more opportunity to more people so long as we allow all voices to be considered and encourage all to achieve their best.
Let’s keep discussions open and build more bridges of understanding.
