No. 6 Kamehameha got 136 rushing yards from Alec Serrao and 102 more from Reino Bush to overpower No. 9 Farrington 32-21 on the Governors’ homecoming night at Kunuiakea Stadium.
The Warriors improved to 2-3 in ILH Open play (3-3 overall). Farrington is 2-5 (1-2 OIA Open).
The Warriors led 16-0 at halftime behind 301 yards of total offense, including 202 on the ground. Farrington made it interesting with two fourth-quarter touchdowns behind senior quarterback Chris Afe.
“It’s a great crowd. I’m glad the kids and fans were excited, but we’ve got to finish better. We’re always playing one (good) half of football,” Warriors coach Abu Maafala said. “Coach (Daniel) Sanchez is building a good program at Farrington.”
The Warriors wasted little time, scoring on their first series. Serrao returned the opening kickoff 41 yards, and then capped a five-play, 45-yard march with a patient 21-yard touchdown run off right tackle. The Warriors led 6-0 with 10:08 left in the first quarter.
Farrington had six possessions in the first half. With a strong rush defense by the Warriors led by linebacker Hoku Arias, five of Farrington’s drives ended with punts — the visitors’ only first down came on a penalty — and the final series ended at the half.
Kamehameha added its second TD on its third series. With Bush and Serrao pounding away behind their O-line, quarterback Christmas Togiai found Braden Akima open on a slant route for a 27-yard touchdown.
The Warriors led 13-0 with 2:25 to go in the opening quarter.
Kamehameha added a 35-yard field goal by Preston Rezentes for a 16-0 lead with 8:40 remaining in the first half.
The Warriors’ longest drive began at their 9-yard line, but after Bush carried for 4 yards to the Farrington 1, Kamehameha was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. That drive ended with a 12-yard pass from Togiai to Brock Ai. Farrington’s Wendell Alob made the touchdown-saving tackle at the 4.
Kamehameha opened the second half with a nine-play, 60-yard scoring drive. Togiai’s second TD pass was a 3-yarder to Davis Mun for a 22-0 lead.
The Govs didn’t quit, scoring their final two TDs in the last eight minutes. Afe found Jace Ehia for a 19-yard strike in the end zone, and later rifled bullets to Selau Kalani for gains of 25 and 13 yards to set up his 1-yard sneak. Farrington was within 32-21 with 4:54 left.
