Big Isle police identify 19-year-old Naalehu woman killed in late-night crash
Hawaii island police today identified the 19-year-old woman who died after crashing into a utility pole late Thursday as Brittney Perry of Naalehu.
An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, but police said they believed inattention was a factor in the crash. It was not immediately known whether alcohol or drugs were involved, they said.
Officers responded to a call at 11:48 p.m. after a 2002 Honda Accord sedan traveling north near the 58-mile marker of Hawaii Belt Road ran off the highway and struck a utility pole, according to a Hawaii Police Department news release.
Police found her unresponsive at the scene. She was transported her to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 4:03 a.m.
Anyone who witnessed the crash can call Hawaii officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at (808) 326-4646, extension 229.
This is the 23rd Hawaii island fatal traffic accident this year compared with 26 at the same time last year.
