Kudos to PBS Hawaii for the re-showing of the program “Kakou: Hawaii’s Town Hall: How Do We Keep Hawai‘i Hawai‘i?”
Many major problem were discussed with heartfelt honesty by members of our community. Of particular poignancy was discussion of the Native Hawaiian sovereignty issue. Some want sovereignty as a means of maintaining Hawaiian cultural values in order to show the world how to live peacefully and cooperatively.
Rather, we should have the entire state practicing these values.
Akahai (modesty), Lokahi (unity), Olu‘olu (agreeable), Ha‘a-ha‘a (humility), Ahonui (patience).
Instead of being a consumptive tourist economy, imagine Hawaii being a center for healing, resolving conflict, peace conferences, the arts, agriculture, science, crafts and more. “Kakou” is an invaluable avenue for hearing from the community.
