Muggy weather is prevailing across the state today, with the heat index reaching 106 degrees Fahrenheit at noon at Kahului airport on Maui, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat index, which factors in the air temperature and relative humidity to offer a sense of what it really feels like outdoors, reached 98 degrees at the Kona airport on Hawaii island, 95 degrees at the Honolulu airport and 90 degrees in Lihue at noon today.

Weather officials said conditions will remain hot and muggy through the evening as a surface trough moves west, but that Friday will be a transitional period as trade winds build gradually across the state.

The trades began to die down Wednesday as an area of high pressure moved away from the Hawaiian Islands, but a dry to normal tradewind pattern is expected by Saturday.
