Vacation rentals enhance people’s lives in many ways. For the tourists: the comforts of home when they travel; a taste of what it’s like to be a local; more affordable lodging than Waikiki.
On the other side, landlords appreciate the income, often much-needed due to Hawaii’s high cost of living. There’s a social benefit as well. I rent my property and have been pleasantly surprised at the number of friendships I’ve made with vacation renters.
The current proposed bill would make it more difficult, if not impossible, for people to use their home as a vacation rental. It would put a Hawaiian vacation out of reach for some travelers, thus denying the state tourism dollars. It would also devastate residents who rely on rental income to supplement their budget.
I urge the City Council to craft regulations that are financially feasible for all parties.
