The purpose of renting a home for vacation is to do things on your own schedule, enjoy privacy, relax without others, allow kids to be kids and stay in a convenient location. And there are many other reasons for not staying in a hotel.
Renting a home while the owner is living there makes no sense, as you don’t have privacy and may feel that you must accommodate their schedules.
Hawaii has always welcomed visitors, yet a proposed restriction on vacation rentals lacks the aloha spirit (“Most speak against vacation rental bill,” Star-Advertiser, Sept. 6).
Local investors and offshore buyers of units in developments pay higher prices that help to subsidize the affordable units that are needed. Denying them the right to operate vacation rentals may reduce sales and hurt the condominium industry and Realtors.
Most tourists stay in hotels and do not benefit from interaction with local residents or enjoy the thrill of living in a home.
The beneficiaries of this proposed ordinance are the offshore owners of hotels and not the local residents and economy.
