The Hawaii soccer team gave up two early goals and was not able to come all the way back in a 2-1 loss to UC San Diego on Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
UCSD (3-0-1), the second-ranked team in NCAA Division II and a Big West opponent beginning in 2020, netted balls from Megumi Barber and Mary Reilly in the 15th and 18th minutes.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-2) had their three-game winning streak snapped despite a flurry of shots around the UCSD goal in the second half. Co-captain Raisa Strom-Okimoto had a few near misses and shots saved, while Lei Medeiros fired a rocket off the crossbar. The final shot count was 17-10 in UH’s favor.
Midfielder Mikaelah Johnson-Griggs skipped one in from 25 yards in the 79th minute to bring the Wahine within a goal, but several desperate shots in the final 10 minutes were turned back.
“I think we really showed our youth today,” coach Michele Nagamine said.
“We kind of slept through the first half. You can’t play 45 minutes of soccer. And we learned that today. We will be better for this in the long run. It’s unfortunate, but it just wasn’t our day.”
