Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau won his Round 1 heat of the Tahiti Pro on Sunday in Teahupoo, Tahiti.
Lau scored an 11.23 to defeat Brazil’s Ian Gouveia (8.60) and South Africa’s Jordy Smith (7.70) in the World Surf League championship tour contest.
The other two Hawaii surfers to compete in Round 1 were Sebastian Zietz and Keanu Asing. Zietz scored a 12.17, and Asing recorded 9.50. Both Zietz and Asing finished second in their respective heats.
Hawaii alum Garcia, Cardinals trip Royals
KANSAS CITY, MO. >> Former University of Hawaii shortstop Greg Garcia went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in Saint Louis’ 8-2 victory over Kansas City on Sunday. Garcia’s double was his sixth of the season.
