Mason Morishige was too scared to watch.
The Roosevelt senior, playing football for the first time to spend more time with his friends, booted a 38-yard field goal with no time remaining to give the Rough Riders a 17-15 win over Pac-Five on Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
Morishige, a soccer player, had his first attempt blocked with time running out. Roosevelt was flagged for illegal procedure on the play but managed to scoop the ball and score, forcing Pac-Five to accept the penalty.
Had Roosevelt not scored, Pac-Five could have simply declined the penalty and won the game.
“We were looking to get off the field actually. We didn’t want to make this game any longer for us,” Roosevelt coach Kui Kahooilihala said.
Instead, Morishige lined up for the field goal and cleared the crossbar with plenty of distance to give Roosevelt its second win of the season after beating Division I Nanakuli last week.
“My max would probably be 35 (yards),” Morishige said before being told it was from 38. “You’re kidding. … I was actually super scared because this is my first game too, so I didn’t know what to do. I honestly don’t know what I did.”
He had to be told he made the kick by his teammates who started celebrating.
“To be honest, I didn’t even see it go through,” Morishige said. “I closed my eyes.”
Neither team scored in the second half until Pac-Five’s Cy Shimamura made a 26-yard field goal with 4:45 remaining to give the Wolfpack (0-1, 0-1 ILH D-II) their first lead.

Roosevelt started its drive on the 20 and used a mix of runs and clutch passes to move down the field.
Quarterback Sky Ogata converted a fourth-and-6 with a 14-yard completion to Scott Chung. It was his only completed pass of more than 3 yards as he split time with Tamaki Iijima, who was 2-for-5 with an interception but threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Josh Maikui.
“Our quarterbacks have got to learn how to take charge and command the offense,” Kahooilihala said. “We’ve got a lot of work (to do).”
Roosevelt blitzed Pac-Five on its opening drive with nine straight runs, capped off by quarterback Ogata’s 2-yard keeper for an early 7-0 lead.
The Rough Riders had 65 yards rushing on their opening drive but managed just 54 yards on the ground the rest of the half.
The Wolfpack scored twice from the 1-yard line in the first half, with Bruce Shewalter converting on fourth-and-goal 17 seconds before the break to cut the Rough Riders’ lead to 14-12.
Shewalter led Pac-Five with 49 rushing yards. Pac-Five quarterbacks Makana Bertelmann and Rocket Uechi combined to go 8-for-32 for 91 yards.
