The Hawaii men’s basketball team hung in with the Brisbane Bullets for three quarters of the Rainbow Warriors’ opening game of their 2018 Australia tour on Saturday, but the National Basketball League professional team pulled away decisively in the fourth period for a 73-54 win.
UH, playing under FIBA international rules for the duration of its four-game tour Down Under, was held to 34 percent shooting in front of about 1,000 people in the close quarters of the Sir John Pidgeon Sports Complex at Brisbane’s Churchie Grammar School. It trailed 49-42 going into the fourth but gave up a few dunks during Brisbane’s decisive run late.
The Rainbows were led by junior college transfer Eddie Stansberry, as the shooting guard scored 10 points. Freshman centers Dawson Carper and Mate Colina scored nine and eight points, while forward Jack Purchase added seven points and guard Brocke Stepteau six.
Wahine improve to 2-0 on tour
The Hawaii women’s basketball team swept its two foreign tour games in New Zealand after a 54-49 win over NZ Premiere South in Christchurch today. The Rainbow Wahine previously defeated NZ Premiere North in Auckland.
UH shot 29 percent from the field and didn’t have a player score in double figures, but the Rainbow Wahine clamped down defensively as well, holding the Kiwi team, a mixture of pros and amateurs, to 27 percent.
Forward Kenna Woodfolk led the way with nine points and 10 rebounds, while Lahni Salanoa scored six.
