Hawaii’s Carissa Moore lost in the semifinal round of the U.S. Open of Surfing on Sunday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Moore recorded a two-wave score of 11.36, but it wasn’t enough as Australian Stephanie Gilmore won the round with an 11.77.
Gilmore fell in the final as Courtney Conlogue of Santa Ana, Calif., won the event, 13.83 to 11.86.
Moore is in fifth place of the World Surf League’s Championship Tour Jeep Leaderboard with 31,295 points.
The next event on the championship tour will be the historic Surf Ranch Pro at Lemoore, Calif., running Sept. 6-9.
In the men’s event, Kanoa Igarashi of Huntington Beach, Calif., won in the final minutes with a score of 8.17 to defeat Griffin Colapinto of San Clemente, Calif., for the title.
Igarashi and Colapinto head to Tahiti for the Tahiti Pro, beginning Friday.
Honolulu wins West Regional opener
A five-run first inning paved the way for the Honolulu Little League team in its 7-3 West Regional opening-round victory over Sunnyside Little League (Tucson, Ariz.) on Sunday at Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino, Calif.
Bruce Boucher knocked in two runs on a first-inning single. Aukai Kea and Sean Yamaguchi recorded doubles for Honolulu (1-0).
On the mound, Kaolu Holt went 31⁄3 innings and struck out five. Holt gave up just one run and allowed no hits.
Hawaii plays Dixie Little League (St. George, Utah) today. This is Utah’s first game of the regional.
Also in this region: Nevada (Silverado West Little League; Las Vegas), Northern California (Tri City Little League; Rocklin) and Southern California (Park View Little League; Chula Vista) in addition to Hawaii, Arizona and Utah.
