Hawaii’s Seth Moniz and Carissa Moore advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open of Surfing on Saturday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Moniz defeated American Evan Geiselman 15.70 to 13.50, earning the highest score of the day. Moniz will face Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi in today’s quarterfinals.
Moore did not win her heat, but her score of 10.90 was good enough to finish second to France’s Johanne Defay (13.16) and advance to today’s quarterfinals, where she will face Australian Nikki Van Dijk.
Hawaii surfers won all three titles that were decided on Saturday, taking the men’s and women’s pro juniors and inaugural Women’s Duct Tape Invitational.
In the women’s pro junior final, Hawaii’s Zoe McDougall scored a 6.83 in the waning minutes to finish with a 12.36. She edged Hawaii’s Summer Macedo (11.83) and Californians Samantha Sibley (10.33) and Kayla Coscino (7.80).
The men’s pro junior went to Hawaii’s Barron Mamiya, who used a 7.73 wave score to take the lead for good halfway through the final. He finished with a 14.40 to edge Cole Houshmand (13.67), Alan Cleland (11.13) and Kade Matson (10.27).
Reigning World Surf League longboard champion Honolua Blomfield of Hawaii easily took the Women’s Duct Tape Invitational, finishing with a 13.33 after scoring an 8.00 on her final wave. Hawaii’s Kelis Kaleopaa finished second (10.14), followed by two-time WSL longboard champion Jennifer Smith (6.07) and Kaitlin Maguire (5.33).
Crabb fifth in FIVB World Tour event
Hawaii’s Taylor Crabb and partner Jake Gibb finished fifth at the Vienna Major, the final 2018 five-star event on the FIVB World Tour for beach volleyball.
Crabb (Punahou) and Gibb, who had to qualify for the main draw, won their pool. They had three-set wins over teams from Spain and Russia before falling in the third round to Qatar, 21-11, 21-18.
Crabb-Gibb will compete in Moscow this week as the 10th seed in the FIVB’s final four-star tourney of the season.
Medals for volleyball teams
Teams from the Aloha Region took a gold and two silvers at the recent USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Hawaii won gold in the girls national youth division, defeating Old Dominion 25-21, 24-26, 26-24, 25-20 to finish 9-0. Members of the team were Siela Avea, Ella Connor, Teani Defries, Kaia Dunford, Aniya Hawthorne, Tayli Ikenaga, Aysia Miller, Nive Tuileta and Chevelle Wagner-Chun. The coach was Lee Lamb.
In the girls national select, Hawaii was up 2-0 but couldn’t hold on against Florida, falling 23-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-10, 15-10. Members of the team coached by Barney Choy were Katie Arashiro, Grace Fiaseu, Pono Gacutan, Baylee Goeas Galdeira, Gennezia Hawkins, Leiana Hoapili, Aria Miller, Senna Roberts-Navarro, Sydney Sniffen and Haiti Tautua’a.
Hawaii also took second in the boys international division, losing to Southern California 25-15, 25-16, 25-19. The team, coached by Randy Nako, was made up of Robert Allen, Micah-Nash Anguay, Kupono Browne, Jack Deuchar, Jesus Garcia, Cole Hogland, Kala’i Leopoldo, Matthew Saffrey, Kolten Soon, Jon Stanley and Tyler Wemple.
A fourth team from the Aloha Region finished sixth in the boys national division.
Patton to speak at Quarterback Club
Former University of Hawaii football standout Kenny Patton will be the featured speaker at the Honolulu Quarterback Club on Monday.
Patton, a defensive back for the Warriors from 2002 to 2006, is now the owner of Patton Sports Performance. His training company works with athletes of all ages, and in a variety of sports, including football, volleyball, tennis, soccer, softball, basketball, baseball and karate.
The Quarterback Club meets at the Maple Garden Restaurant. The lunch is at 11:30 a.m., and the program begins at noon. The luncheon costs $17 per person for members and guests that include tax and gratuities.
