Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel removed four vessels Tuesday that were illegally stored along Lanikai Beach.

In June, state boating officials warned owners of 90 small boats illegally stored on the beach that unauthorized vessels would be impounded. The three catamarans and one sailboat removed Tuesday were all that was left of the illegally stored vessels.

Personnel from DLNR’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation and Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement oversaw the removal. DOBOR is in the process of inspecting the shoreline to determine whether additional vessels also may need to be removed.

“We have listened to the numerous community concerns about privately owned vessels being stored illegally and taking up large portions of public beach area at Lanikai,” said DOBOR administrator Ed Underwood. “This enforcement action by DLNR was in response to those concerns. We will continue to monitor and seize all vessels that are being stored overnight on the beach without a permit.”

The four vessels removed were taken to an impound yard at the Keehi small boat harbor. If they are not claimed by their owners, the vessels may be put up for auction.
