A man was in serious condition Sunday after accidentally setting himself on fire in the Ala Moana area.
The incident happened at about 6:40 a.m. behind Hawaiian Brian’s at 1680 Kapiolani Blvd., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Scot Seguirant.
He said a caller reported a man had set himself on fire with gasoline and was yelling. The man was no longer on fire by the time firefighters arrived.
Firefighters turned the patient over to paramedics.
Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said the man was apparently checking his portable gasoline tank when gasoline splashed on him. Then, when he lit a cigarette, the gasoline burst into flames, causing first- and second-degree burns to his upper body.
She said paramedics treated the man at the scene and took him in serious condition to a hospital.
Police said officers also responded and opened a case for an injured person.
Firefighters rescue hiker near lighthouse
Honolulu firefighters Sunday plucked a hiker in distress off a hillside below Makapuu Lighthouse.
Someone at the tide pools below the lighthouse reported the hiker in trouble on the hillside at about 10:40 a.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Scot Seguirant.
About 16 firefighters in six units responded, and a firefighter was dropped off by helicopter near the woman, a tourist in her 30s.
Seguirant said there was a language barrier with the woman, and firefighters were concerned because she appeared weak. Firefighters flew the woman by helicopter to Sandy Beach, where she was transferred in non-life-threatening condition to paramedics.
Coast Guard seeks to find float’s owner
The Coast Guard is seeking the public’s help in identifying the owner of a white unicorn float found Saturday off of Olowalu Beach.
There are no reports of missing persons in the area. The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter crew from Barbers Point and a response boat crew from Maui to conduct a search of the area.
Anyone with information regarding the float can contact the Sector Honolulu Command Center at 842-2600.
At 1:30 p.m. mariners aboard the recreational sailboat Volpaia found the unicorn float adrift off of Olowalu Beach with no signs of the owners and notified Sector Honolulu watch-standers.
The weather at the time of the report was seas of less than 1 foot with wind out of the northeast at 19 mph.
