Two golfers from Hawaii, Parker McLachlin and John Oda, shot 3-under 69 and are tied for 41st after the first round of the Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Ky., on Thursday.
They trail leader Troy Merritt (course-record-tying 10-under 62) by seven shots and are just four shots behind three second-place golfers.
McLachlin, 39, a Punahou and UCLA alum, got off to a hot start on the back nine, recording five birdies to come in at 5-under 31. But he bogeyed his last two holes and closed with a back nine of 2-over 38.
McLachlin won $81,366 at last week’s John Deere Classic and has two top-25 finishes and four made cuts in seven PGA starts this season.
Oda, 22, a Moanalua and UNLV alum, had seven birdies and four bogeys. He had a front-nine 1-under 35 and closed with a 2-under 34.
