University of Hawaii men’s volleyball players Colton Cowell and Brett Rosenmeier pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the World University Beach Volleyball Championships to finish 13th in Munich on Thursday.
Cowell and Rosenmeier, seeded 28th, surprised No. 2 seed Mateusz Lysikowski and Mateusz Paszkowski of Poland 21-18, 12-21, 15-12 in a match that lasted 43 minutes at the TUM courts at Olympic Park. Earlier Thursday, Cowell and Rosenmeier were swept 21-16, 22-20 by 17th-seeded Dzmitry Abramenka and Pavel Piatrus of Belarus in the quarterfinals of 9-16 classification, then outlasted Chile’s Pablo Prieto Figueroa and Ignacio Zaval Vuletich, the No. 15 seed, 15-21, 21-18, 22-20, in the loser semifinals.
The UH pair went 4-3 in the four-day event.
