The replacement of a damaged transformer in Iroquois Point will require three separate outages, with the first set from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Hawaiian Electric Company.

Among those affected will be the Puuloa Rifle Range, NEX mini-mart and about 1,400 units in the Kapilina Beach Homes, formerly known as Iroquois Point naval homes.

HECO said the Tuesday outage is necessary to prepare for the installation of a new transformer at the Iroquois Point substation in August. The existing transformer was damaged by a rat, causing a lengthy outage in June.

Two other outages are planned for four hours Thursday, Aug. 16, and eight to 10 hours on Thursday, Aug. 30.

The three, separate outages are needed for three complex procedures — to remove the overhead conductors and remove the failed transformer, then to reinstall them after the replacement transformer is placed, and finally, to move service from the mobile substation currently providing power to the area.

Each phase requires different crews doing work underground and above ground, as well as contractors and specialized equipment, including a crane, according to HECO.

HECO provides service up to and including the transformer, while the electrical infrastructure feeding the community is serviced by Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii.

Once HECO’s repairs are completed, NAVFAC will restore power to area homes. Since NAVFAC’s restoration procedure is done in phases to avoid overloading the distribution system, some residents may not get their electric service restored immediately.
