A Pahoa man was cited for the second time for loitering at the entrance to the shuttered Lava Tree State Monument on June 29, according to state officials.

Daniel W. Records, 37, of Pahoa was riding a motorcycle up Lava Tree Road from the Highway 132 entrance, according to state Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement officers. Earlier, on June 6, he was one of five people cited for loitering in the same area.

The number of citations for loitering in closed areas in the East Rift Eruption Zone, on the other hand, has dropped over the past week, with only two, bringing the total to 84 since the eruption began in early May.

DOCARE officers cited another Pahoa resident, Ano Hanamana, 49, on Tuesday. Officers observed him walking in the closed disaster area near Papaya Farms Road.

Under a proclamation issued by Gov. David Ige last month, people convicted of loitering in closed areas of the East Rift Eruption Zone could face penalties of up to $5000 in fines and a year in jail.

In support of Hawaii County police and the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency, DOCARE is continuing patrols in closed areas, including Lava Tree State Monument and MacKenzie State Recreation Area, both of which are under the jurisdiction of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks.
