Twenty-six nations, 47 surface ships, five submarines, 18 national land forces, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel will participate in the world’s largest international maritime exercise June 27 to Aug. 2.

At left are two destroyers, the USS Chung Hoon and USS Sterett. Any sailor that goes from one ship to the other must salute leaving one and then salute coming aboard the other. At right, the Japanese flag aboard the Japanese helicopter destroyer Ise flies in front of the aircraft carrier, USS Carl Vinson (with the number 70 on it). Each are docked on opposite sides of Hotel pier.
