Free health clinic opens at Keaau High School

The state Health Department and Hawaii County are offering free health clinics to residents of all ages, starting today, at Keaau High School in partnership with the U.S. Army Reserves Innovative Readiness Training Program.

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. over nine days, the Tropic Care health clinics will be offered by Oahu-based 1984th U.S. Army Hospital, including medical health screening, school sports physical exams, dental services, eye exams, hearing screenings, nutritional consultation, veteran services and prescription eyeglasses. The medical clinic will be available today through Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and June 25 to 28. No ID or proof of insurance is needed.

“We are proud to be a part of the team, including hundreds of volunteers, coordinating this vital event bringing access to care to thousands in the community who need it most,” said health director Bruce Anderson in a news release. “Especially in the wake of the ongoing volcanic eruptions, the people of Hawaii island need efficient access to health and wellness services now more than ever. We anticipate attendance will be very high throughout the course of the event, so we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as service providers work to help as many people as possible.”

At the same time, 40 community resource agencies will be onsite, and free breakfast and lunch will be served to keiki ages 3 to 18. The agencies offer information on insurance, Native Hawaiian care, mental health, substance treatment services, services for children with special needs, foster family services, nutritional programs, senior services and acupuncture/massage therapy.

Breakfast will be served to youth ages 3 to 18 from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m., and lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A free clinic offering legal advice will also be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23.

The event is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, and a long wait is expected. Participants should bring water, snacks, current medications and eyeglasses. More information is available at the Hawaii District Health Office’s Public Health Nursing program at 974-6035.
