Hanalei Colony Resort to remain closed indefinitely

HANALEI COLONY RESORT

Hanalei Colony Resort and the surrounding communities of Lumahai, Wainiha, and Haena were ravaged by severe flooding and landslides from April 13 to 16 and were named as federal, state and county disaster sites.

Hanalei Colony Resort announced this morning that it would remain closed indefinitely as a result of the heavy rains that flooded parts of Oahu and Kauai in mid-April.

The resort and the surrounding communities of Lumahai, Wainiha, and Haena were ravaged by severe flooding and landslides from April 13 to 16 and were named as federal, state and county disaster sites.

Repairs to the resort, which was heavily damaged, are expected to be ongoing for at least several months. The recovery process is challenging because Kuhio Highway, the main thoroughfare leading to the resort and surrounding communities, is still closed with intermittent access for credentialed full-time residents only. Kuhio Highway’s disaster-related vehicle weight restrictions also have delayed supplies and nonessential utility crews from reaching the resort. The resort’s phone service, which was compromised, remains unreliable.

According to the resort, all reservations through Sept. 1 will be canceled and refunded in full within the next 21 days. Additional cancellation dates will be determined by the recovery of disaster areas, which have already been extended.

Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho recently issued a 60-day disaster extension. The extension prolongs an emergency rule prohibiting Hanalei Colony Resort and all area accommodations from operating transient vacation rentals.
