Cactus Bistro, which serves “Modern Latin Cuisine, with Aloha,” is closing Saturday after six years in Kailua.
A notice in the Cactus newsletter and Facebook page announced the closure “with heavy heart. … We have made great memories together, made some friends along the way and had a lot of fun! Cactus would like to say thank you for six amazing years in Kailua!”
Executive chef/owner John Memering opened the corner bistro at 767 Kailua Road in 2012. More recently, Matthew Laidlaw became executive chef and specialized in Argentine dishes, according to the Facebook page. He could not be reached for comment.

2 police bikes taken in break-in
Burglars broke into a downtown Hilo police substation Wednesday evening and stole a pair of police patrol bicycles.
One of the bicycles, each valued at $1,200 and labeled “Police” in white letters, was recovered Thursday morning in water off Bayfront Highway.
Police are looking for Keola Werner- Kealoha, 27, for questioning in the incident. He is known to frequent the Hilo and Kona areas.
Runaway teen turns self in
Hawaii island police said late Thursday afternoon that a 13-year-old runaway has been found.
The teen turned himself in at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Kau Police Station.

Driver dies after truck plunges
A 47-year-old male driver from Haiku was killed Wednesday when his pickup truck plunged 200 feet over a cliff on Maui’s Hana Highway and ended up partially submerged in water, Maui police said.
The man was driving a white 2013 GMC pickup truck north on Hana Highway around 1:44 p.m. when he went over a 200-foot cliff at the top of Maliko Gulch toward Hookipa, police said.
At the bottom of the cliff, emergency crews recovered the truck, which was partially submerged.
The driver was found inside and pronounced dead at the scene.
His identity has yet to be released.
