Pearl City gym hosting tryouts for ‘Next Olympic Hopeful’

The 24 Hour Fitness at Pearl City is one of several across the nation hosting in-person tryouts for the Next U.S. Olympic Hopeful from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The tryouts at Pearl City Super-Sport Gym, 1000 Kamehameha Highway, are part of a partnership with the U.S. Olympic Committee in a search for the next generation of athletes to become part of TeamUSA.

Candidates participating in tryouts will be competing in a battery of tests for strength, mobility and endurance at three stations, which will include a 30-meter sprint, pull-ups and vertical jump.

Those who qualify — the top 100 — get the opportunity to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center this summer, as well as have their journey televised on NBC’s “Scouting Camp — The Next Olympic Hopeful.” Eventually, the athletes will be narrowed down to eight, with one winner for eight sports: bobsled, skeleton, boxing, canoe/kayak, cycling, rowing, rugby and weightlifting.

Last year, two winners from the 24 Hour Fitness tryouts included Amanda Alvarez from Washington state, who was selected for skeleton, and Josh Williamson of Florida for bobsled. Williamson earned five medals, including two gold, in international competition.
