The Association of Volleyball Professionals announced the addition of the AVP Hawaii Invitational at Waikiki Beach to its schedule for this year.
The Sept. 14-16 event is in partnership with the sponsoring Hawaii Tourism Authority. It is the first time that an AVP event will be played in Waikiki since the 2005 Honolulu Best of the Beach won by Todd Rogers and Sean Scott (Punahou/University of
Hawaii).
The parties said it will be an international exhibition event featuring “top male and female beach volleyball stars from across the United States and abroad,” according to a release Wednesday. Courts will be set up on the beach fronting the Hilton Hawaiian Village and Fort DeRussy.
Among the players with Hawaii ties currently on tour are: brothers Riley and Maddison McKibbin (Punahou); brothers Taylor and Trevor Crabb (Punahou); Tri Bourne (Punahou); Karissa Cook (UH); Katie Spieler (UH); and Brittany Tiegs (UH).
Under terms of the contract, the HTA will pay the AVP $500,000. There are a series of three, one-year options after this year.
“Because of this new endeavor with the HTA, our official destination partner for this event, we are thrilled to be able to bring the highest level of beach volleyball to the beaches of America’s beloved Aloha State in a fresh, new, and exciting way,” said Donald Sun, AVP managing partner, in a release.
“The AVP Hawai‘i Invitational is a major addition to Hawaii’s sports marketing portfolio and we thank the AVP for believing in Waikiki Beach as a world-class venue to further expand the reach of professional beach volleyball to audiences worldwide,” said George D. Szigeti, HTA president and CEO.
Organizers said the event will include an interactive sponsor village experience, a keiki volleyball clinic, meet-and-greets with the players, sunrise yoga in the Club AVP area and other attractions.
General admission is to be free. VIP locations will also be offered.
