University of Hawaii junior attacker Irene Gonzalez has been named an Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches first-team All-American, the organization announced Monday.
Rainbow Wahine senior utility Chloe Barr received honorable mention.
Gonzalez, of Barcelona, Spain, registered 53 goals and 36 assists this season for Hawaii (21-5). She was named the Big West player of the year.
Gonzalez is the first Rainbow Wahine to receive ACWPC first-team honors since Monika Eggens in 2013.
Barr, of Adelaide, Australia, had 47 goals and 30 assists this season.
Pair from Hawaii win Golden Gloves
Hawaii’s Breeanna Locquiao and Jazzelle Rabago-Bobadilla won National Golden Gloves boxing titles at a tournament that ended May 19 in Omaha, Neb.
Locquiao, a former University of Hawaii soccer player, won a 3-2 decision over New York’s Juliette Ladisa in the 106-pound final.
Rabago-Bobadilla won a 3-2 decision over Utah’s Maryguenn Villinga in the 112-pound final.
It was the first National Golden Gloves tournament that featured female boxers.
Lau surfs into third round in Bali
Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau won his second-round heat at the Corona Bali Protected today in Keramas, Bali.
Lau defeated California’s Patrick Gudauskas 15.57 to 8.67.
Lau joins fellow Hawaii surfers John John Florence and Keanu Asing in the third round.
Four local surfers are entered in the Corona Bali Protected Women’s Pro, which has yet to start.
Suzuki breaks Hawaii home run record
Maui native Kurt Suzuki hit his seventh home run of the season in the second game of Atlanta’s doubleheader split against the New York Mets, giving him 109 for his 11-year MLB career.
Suzuki, a catcher, moved into a tie with Shane Victorino on May 19 for the most career home runs by a Hawaii- born player, and now has the record to himself.
The 34-year-old Baldwin High and Cal State Fullerton product hit a 405-foot solo shot in the second inning of Monday’s nightcap, an 8-5 loss.
