Hawaiian Volcano Observatory finds temporary home at UH-Hilo

The U.S Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has found a temporary home at the University of Hawaii at Hilo since early May, when it was forced to evacuate from its facilities at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park due to the eruption.
The U.S Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has found a temporary home at the University of Hawaii at Hilo since early May, when it was forced to evacuate from its facilities at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park due to the eruption.
About two dozen Hawaii Volcanoes National Park staffers, including personnel that the U.S. Geological Survey sent to Hawaii to respond to the eruption, are now working out of UH-Hilo.
The two entities have had a longstanding relationship, with USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory providing students with internships and other opportunities to engage in the monitoring of an active volcano for years. Much of the geology and related programs at UH-Hilo have been developed to complement and support the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Three recent graduates of UH-Hilo are among the USGS personnel working around the clock to gather and analyze up-to-the-minute information on the eruption and lava flows.
