The city’s Emergency Medical Services Department said one of its ambulance crews administered lifesaving medical treatment on the motorcyclist and transported him to an area hospital.
Police said the man died at Castle Medical Center.
2 men hiking ‘Stairway to Hell’ rescued
Honolulu firefighters rescued two hikers Sunday who were injured on what’s sometimes called the Stairway to Hell.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant said the two male hikers, both visitors, started their hike in Moanalua Valley. When they reached the top of the ridge above Haiku Valley in Windward Oahu, instead of heading to the right down Haiku Stairs — also known as the Stairway to Heaven, they chose to descend an older, abandoned set of stairs at left.
That is known as Red Hill Ridge, Haiku Hidden Stairway and the Stairway to Hell.
Seguirant said when the hikers reached the end of the stairs about two-thirds down to the valley floor, they continued descending and were injured when they slid down some steep terrain.
HFD got the call at 3:27 p.m.
The Department’s Air 1 helicopter located the injured hikers and dropped off two rescue specialists. One of the injured hikers was in a hard-to-reach location and had to be lowered to a spot that was accessible by the helicopter.
The helicopter transported the two hikers to Kaneohe District Park, where a city ambulance was waiting for them.
