RENO, Nev. >> Amtrak says police have found no evidence of foul play related to severe injuries suffered by a 22-year-old train passenger who was found unconscious next to railroad tracks in Truckee, Calif.
The passenger, Aaron Salazar, is a 2015 graduate of Kaiser High School who attends Portland State University, where he majors in engineering.
Salazar lived in Hawaii Kai with his mother, sister and grandmother. He remains hospitalized in Reno, Nev., after being found May 15 while traveling from Denver to Portland, Ore.
Amtrak said Saturday that investigators reached out to more than 300 customers, crew and friends and found “no evidence of a physical altercation” while Salazar was on the train.
According to Amtrak’s statement, some people contacted said Salazar “expressed to them a number of life concerns and challenges.”
His family believes Salazar, who was gay, was attacked and didn’t jump from the train.
Salazar’s cousin, Sonia Trujillo, told the Star-Advertiser that Salazar suffered injuries to his head and brain, bruises to his rib cage and abdomen, a broken pelvis and nose and severe unexplained burns on the inside of his thighs — indication of a possible hate crime.
