Season tickets for Hawaii women’s volleyball are on sale for a home season that includes 18 matches at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine, under second-year coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, open with the Aug. 24-26 Texaco Invitational with Gonzaga, Kansas State and UCLA. Other nonconference matches include Idaho, San Diego State and Portland in the Hawaiian Airlines Classic, Sept. 6-9, as well as Coastal Carolina and Oregon.
Hawaii, 20-8 overall and 14-2 in the Big West last season, starts conference play on the road at UC Davis on Sept. 21. The Wahine’s first home Big West match is Sept. 28 against Cal State Fullerton.
Tickets are available online at etickethawaii.com, by phone at (808) 956-4482 and at the Stan Sheriff Center, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Prices range from $75 (students ages 4 to high school) through $175 (lower level plus ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue seat premium).
Former Wahine setter new Cal coach
Former Hawaii setter Jennifer Carey Dorr, who helped the Rainbow Wahine to two NCAA third-place finishes during her career, has been named the head volleyball coach at California.
Dorr, who played for the Rainbow Wahine from 1999 to 2002, has been an assistant for the Golden Bears for the past five seasons. She also was Cal’s director of volleyball operations (2009-10) following stints at Georgia Tech and Texas A&M.
Also on the Cal staff are former UH setter Cayley Thurlby (director of volleyball operations) and Punahou graduate Spencer McLachlin (assistant). The two were formerly on staff at UCLA.
UH sailing continues at nationals
The UH women’s sailing team was in 17th place heading into today’s second day of the Western Semifinals in the 2018 ICSA Sperry Women’s National Championships in Norfolk, Va.
Thirty-six schools, divided into two 18-team regattas, took to the water for 14 races.
UH totaled 195 points, which included a first-place finish in the fifth round of races in the A division.
The semifinals finish today, with the top nine teams from each group advancing to the finals round. UH has 195 points, which is 70 points off the pace of ninth-place Georgetown.
This is UH’s 18th appearance in the women’s nationals and it is seeking to advance past the semifinals for the first time since 2012.
USTA Leadership Team has Hawaii ties
Hawaii residents Taryn Fujimori and Reyn Miyagawa were two of the more than 30 players nationwide named to the USTA Junior Leadership team on Tuesday. The leadership team recognizes America’s finest junior tennis players who exhibit leadership, sportsmanship and character both on and off the court.
Fujimori, 18, has been ranked as high as No. 6 in the Girls 18s standings in the USTA Hawaii-Pacific section and won the 2017 OIA girls doubles championship.
Miyagawa, 17, has been ranked among the Top 300 18-and-under boys in the USTA’s national standings, as well as No. 6 in the Hawaii-Pacific section. He’s the captain of the Mid-Pacific Institute’s varsity tennis team and is a two-time ILH first-team selection.
