2 locals closer to playing in U.S. Open
Pros Sam Cyr and Jared Sawada, and amateur Chris Stutts — all from Hawaii — advanced out of our two local qualifiers and are a step away from playing in the 118th U.S. Open. The trio has to get through sectionals next month to play at Shinnecock Hills.
Tiffany Chan, the first LPGA player from Hong Kong, won the sectional earlier this month at Kaanapali to earn a place in the 73rd U.S. Women’s Open. Chan was the only golfer to break par (70-71) in the 36-hole qualifier. Maui junior Reese Guzman was second, 13 shots back, to earn the alternate slot.
That was just the start of USGA qualifiers here. The U.S. Senior Open qualifier is June 4 (Waialae), followed by the U.S. Girls and Boys Junior Amateurs on June 20 (Wailua).
The adult U.S. Amateur qualifiers are July 9 (Kapolei), followed by U.S. Senior Amateur (July 30 at Pearl), Mid-Amateur (Aug. 14 at Leilehua), Senior Women’s Amateur (Sept. 12 at Ko Olina) and Amateur Four-Ball (Dec. 3 TBA).
The inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open is July 12-15 in Chicago. The closest qualifier is at San Francisco’s Olympic Club on June 12.
Golfers can sign up for all qualifiers at USGA.org.
