Furlough inmate is suspect in stabbing
A 48-year-old Hawaii island man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of first-degree assault in connection with a stabbing that occurred while he was on work furlough from the Hale Nani correctional facility.
Hawaii County police opened the case after Hilo Medical Center staff reported they were treating a 50-year-old Hilo man who showed up at its emergency room around 7 p.m. with a stab wound to his torso and upper leg.
Police determined the incident stemmed from an earlier argument between the victim and the suspect at the Mooheau bus terminal.
Witnesses reported that the suspect stabbed the victim, who was wielding a bat during the scuffle. Police report the victim, who knew the suspect, is in good condition after undergoing surgery.
The suspect was treated for abrasions by Hawaii Community Correctional Center staff before he was turned over to police.
