University of Hawaii sophomore Lily Lowe won the high jump title and Haleigh Sudbeck claimed the hammer throw at the Big West championships on Saturday in Northridge, Calif.
Lowe, who placed sixth at the conference meet last year, cleared a career-best 6 feet, 0.5 inches to claim the championship. Erinn Beattie of UC Davis was second at 5-9.25. Lowe’s leap is tied for sixth in the NCAA this season.
Sudbeck became the first UH athlete to win the Big West title in the hammer throw at 184 feet, 4 inches.
UH freshman Kristen LaCosse finished fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.56.
On Friday, junior Karen Bulger finished second in the javelin at 147-11 and sophomore Alexis Brenzil placed fifth at 144-5.
Rainbow Wahine swept in season finale
UC Davis pitchers Katie Kibby and Brooke Yanez combined to throw 14 shutout innings and the Aggies swept the University of Hawaii softball team in Saturday’s season-ending doubleheader in Davis, Calif.
Kibby held the Rainbow Wahine to three singles, struck out five and walked four in the Aggies’ 6-0 win in the opening game at UCD’s La Rue Field. Yanez struck out seven and walked none while allowing four hits to send UH to a 5-0 loss to close a 23-27 season.
UH senior Dana Thomsen (15-16), who earned a shutout victory to open the series Friday, gave up six runs on seven hits and struck out six and took the loss in Saturday’s opener. Freshman Emily Klee gave up three runs in one-third of an inning and took the loss in the finale.
UH tied for seventh in the Big West at 7-14. Cal State Fullerton won the conference title at 18-3.
UH duo falls in USAV beach final
Hawaii’s Brett Rosenmeier and Colton Cowell fell short in their title quest at the USAV Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship on Saturday, losing to Florida State’s Jon Justice and Adam Wienckowski 15-21, 28-26, 15-12 at Hermosa Beach, Calif.
The UH pair, who placed fourth in this event last year, finished the three-day tournament 3-1. The winning Seminoles pair will represent the United States at the FISU World University Games in Munich in August.
Saturday’s final was a rematch of Thursday’s Pool B final, won by Rosenmeier and Cowell 21-14, 19-21, 15-12.
On Saturday, the Rainbow Warriors duo used an 8-3 run to close out Set 1 and take a 1-0 lead. Hawaii appeared poised for a straight-set sweep when it took a 16-12 lead in Set 2, only to have the Seminoles rally with an 8-3 spurt to get the first of six set points.
Rosenmeier/Cowell held off six set points but not a seventh, with FSU winning 28-26, forcing Set 3. The Warriors led the deciding set 7-5, but Justice/Wienchkowski again rallied, tying at 10, then using a 5-2 run to take the victory.
UH Hilo men’s basketball adds 7 players
The Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball team added seven players for the 2018-19 season.
The class is comprised of a graduate transfer, three transfers and three high school players.
The graduate transfer is Larry Bush (6-foot-2, guard; UNLV). The transfers are James Griffin (6-5, forward; West Liberty), Jordan Graves (6-2, guard; Santa Rosa College) and Kaveon Moore (6-3 guard; Phoenix College).
The incoming freshmen are Damani Whitlock (6-foot, guard; Eastvale, Calif.), Jalen Thompson (6-3 guard; West Linn, Ore.) and Tom Power (6-7, forward; Cambridge, New Zealand).
HPU beats Hawaii Hilo in baseball
Joshua Muneno scattered eight hits in a complete-game performance and Wyatt Hoppie batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the Hawaii Pacific baseball team beat Hawaii Hilo 5-2 on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Hoppie’s two-run double in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie.
The Sharks improved to 21-27, 14-25 PacWest, while the Vulcans dropped to 20-26, 16-21.
