Michigan eliminated the University of Hawaii women’s tennis team from the NCAA championships with a 4-0 first-round sweep on Friday in Stanford, Calif.
The 17th-ranked Wolverines advanced to the round of 32 to face host Stanford today, while the Big West champion Rainbow Wahine ended their season at 13-7.
Michigan opened the match at Stanford’s Taube Family Tennis Center by claiming the doubles point. Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor swept UH’s duo of Nikola Dolakova and Klara Pribylova 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles match. Alyvia Jones and Mira Ruder-Hook pulled out a 6-4 win over UH’s Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma on the No. 2 court to secure the point. UH led on the third court at the time.
In singles, Minor defeated Dolakova 6-2, 6-2 and Jones swept Dolakova 6-4, 6-0. Ruder-Hook earned the final point with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Michelle Pits at No. 5 singles.
Melounova had forced a third set against the 29th-ranked Fahey on the No. 1 court when the match ended. Melounova, ranked 73rd nationally, will represent the Big West at the NCAA singles championship set for May 23-28 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center in North Carolina.
