Christian Kapeliela drove in four runs and Joshua Muneno earned a complete-game win in the Hawaii Pacific University baseball team’s 12-0 rout of Hawaii Hilo on Sunday at Wong Stadium in Hilo.
Kapeliela went 3-for-6 with a home run and Ryan Torres-Torioka went 3-for-5 and scored four runs for the Sharks (20-27), who broke away in the nonconference meeting with a six-run fourth inning. Muneno (3-2) struck out five and did not issue a walk while holding the Vulcans (20-25) to six hits.
The Sharks and Vulcans meet again in a three-game series starting Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
World Team wins WSL Founders’ Cup
Hawaii’s John John Florence and Carissa Moore contributed to a third-place finish for the USA Team in the inaugural World Surf League Founders’ Cup of Surfing on Sunday in Lemoore, Calif.
The World Team won the first official event at the WSL Surf Ranch, followed by Brazil. Australia came in fourth and Europe fifth.
Florence, the two-time WSL champion, placed third in his final heat against Brazil’s Gabriel Medina and Michel Bourez of Tahiti and the World Team, but claimed the event’s Quiksilver Best Air Award with his 9.80 in his second run Saturday. Moore fell short to Silvana Lima of Brazil with an 8.77 in her final heat of the team event. Kelly Slater posted a 9.00 in his final heat, but South Africa’s Jordy Smith’s 9.27 clinched the win for the World Team.
