Kauai County plans to run a daily shuttle for residents in the isolated north shore communities of Haena and Wainiha. It will operate along Kuhio Highway, which is restricted to one lane of emergency traffic following more than a dozen landslides triggered by last month’s floods, and follow a route to and from the Kilauea Post Office.
The shuttle is scheduled to leave Wainiha at 6 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. Along the way to the post office, it will stop at the Hanalei Courthouse, Hanalei Center, Haraguchi, Princeville Shopping Center and Kilauea Gym.
The shuttle will carry up to 45 passengers, who will be restricted to two grocery bag-size carry-ons.
County officials Tuesday also announced the resumption of gas distribution to households in Haena and Wainiha, while Kauai Humane Society volunteers set up free veterinary services at the Hanalei Colony Resort in Haena.
Ten pallets of fresh food were delivered Monday to the YMCA’s Camp Naue community kitchen. The food was brought in along Kuhio Highway’s emergency lane by police truck and two all-terrain vehicles towing trailers. A volunteer flotilla of boats also was expected to resume bringing in supplies from Hanalei.
County officials are asking for supplies to help in the recovery and cleanup. Donors should label the supplies for either Haena or Wainiha and leave the donations at the Malama Kauai Distribution Center at Common Ground on Kuawa Road in Kilauea between 10 a.m. and
4 p.m.
