Any drama created during the ILH regular season was ended quickly in the postseason.
Mid-Pacific, ranked No. 2 in the state, dominated the league’s double-elimination tournament, which culminated in Friday’s 12-1 blowout win over ‘Iolani in five innings at Hans L’Orange Park.
The Owls (15-3) scored 10 runs in the first inning and coasted to their 14th ILH championship under coach Dunn Muramaru, who has watched his Owls win six of the last seven league titles.
MPI missed states last season after finishing 6-9, but is back as the league’s seeded entrant into the state tournament May 8-11 at Les Murakami Stadium.
“This has been a tough year,” Muramaru said. “It’s never easy and these guys have worked really hard. They buy in and do stuff that we want them to do, and I think that’s what really is good for me. That’s what keeps me coaching.”
The Owls sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning against the third-ranked Raiders (14-5-1), who were playing their sixth game in eight days.
Eight straight batters reached base after Jacob Yoshino reached on a fielder’s choice for the first out.
Kyle Layugan powered an RBI triple over the head of the right fielder and added an RBI single back up the middle later in the inning to make it 8-0.
Cameron Ching doubled in a run and added an RBI single to make it a 10-run margin.
“This year we’ve been trying to get those small hits and it’s really worked out for us all season,” said Layugan, who finished with three RBIs. “We were looking for pitches and anticipating to swing and, I mean, once one guy starts everything, then it just keeps rolling and we kept getting those small hits.”
The runs were nice, but not necessarily needed for MPI starter Shion Matsushita, who hadn’t given up a run in his first 17 innings against ‘Iolani this season.
The sidearm-thrower allowed four hits in six shutout innings of a 1-0 win against ‘Iolani in the first meeting of the season and hurled a six-hit shutout in the second game.
Matsushita gave up a leadoff walk to start the second after the long wait in the dugout following MPI’s 10-run first inning. His no-hitter was broken up by Cade Yonamine’s leadoff double in the top of the fifth and Jacob Hinderleider scored Yonamine on a one-out infield single.
“Having a 10-run lead in the first inning is kind of like you’re just throwing a bullpen getting ready,” Matsushita said. “I was just trying to throw strikes and let my defense do the work as always.”
Ching finished with three hits and Wyatt Young tripled, reached base three times and scored twice for MPI.
‘Iolani finished second in both the regular season and tournament and is one of three ILH teams — Punahou is the third — to make the state tournament.
The Raiders’ last appearance at states was in 2013.
“They had back-to-back five-win seasons, and to come back and play for the ILH title I think is big,” ‘Iolani coach Kurt Miyahira said. “They deal with adversity and hear a lot of outside noise, but they play for each other and that’s what we try to get out of them. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
