Long Beach State pitcher Cielo Meza followed Friday’s record-breaking performance by throwing a five-inning no-hitter in the 49ers’ 8-0 win over the University of Hawaii softball team in the first game of Saturday’s Big West doubleheader in Long Beach, Calif.
No. 18 Long Beach State (29-7, 3-0 BWC) completed the series sweep of the Rainbow Wahine (16-16, 0-3) with a 6-3 win in the finale at LBSU Softball Complex.
Meza struck out a school-record 17 on Friday and retired the first 10 batters she faced on Saturday before walking Brittnee Rossi in the fourth inning. She retired the next five batters in order to finish off the no-hitter.
In the second game, UH took a 3-2 lead in the third inning on Callee Heen’s solo home run, her team-high 11th of the season. But the 49ers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, reclaiming the lead on Julia Lombardi’s two-run double. UH freshman Dominique Martinez went the distance in her first career start, giving up 10 hits and walking three with no strikeouts.
UH plays host to Cal Poly in its first conference home series starting Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Nixon leads Wahine past UC Davis
Hawaii senior Claire Nixon tied a career high with four goals and Chloe Barr added a hat trick to lead the fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team to a 12-7 Big West win over No. 10 UC Davis on Saturday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Femke Aan scored two goals and assisted on two more and Molly DiLalla finished with 10 saves for UH (17-4, 2-0 BWC). Greta Kohlmoos led UC Davis (16-8, 1-1) with three goals.
The Rainbow Wahine host Long Beach State in their home finale on Saturday at DKAC.
UH Hilo baseball splits with Dixie State
Phillip Steering and Jaryn Kanbara homered as the Hawaii Hilo baseball team beat Dixie State 6-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday in St. George, Utah.
Kanbara and RJ Romo both drove in two runs for the Vulcans in the seven-inning game.
In the first game, Hilo’s Steering batted 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs and Kanbara went 3-for-4 in a 13-5 loss.
The Vulcans moved to 12-16, 8-12 PacWest, while the Trailblazers went to 15-19, 11-13.

The Sharks (13-15, 7-13 PacWest) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Christian Kapeliela’s run-scoring double, Codi Santana’s RBI groundout and Matthew Tsutomi’s RBI single.
The Sunbirds (14-12, 11-9) scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and three in the eighth.
Blomfield wins Surf Fest longboard title
Oahu’s Honolua Blomfield won the women’s longboard division at the Caparica Primavera Surf Fest on Saturday in Costa da Caparica, Almada, Portugal.
Blomfield won the four-person final with a two-wave total of 11.73. France’s Justine Dupont placed second with an 11.34.
Hemmings to speak at QB Club
Fred Hemmings, a champion surfer and politician, will be the featured speaker at Monday’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Hemmings will discuss his book “Local Boy, A Memoir.”
The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program to start at noon. The cost is $16. The meeting is open to the general public.
